November is the month to give thanks and to give back. And as engaged citizens of the world, we have invited Kamil Khan, Community Engagement Coordinator in the Refugee Services Department at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, to join us and share with us what they have learned through the very important work they are doing around refugee resettling around the country, and they impact they have seen on our communities, as well as in our organizations.

A recent Deloitte study from 2019 showed that companies perform better financially when they address both their core business operations as well as their broader responsibility to society. With tighter labor markets, aging demographics, a desire to drive corporate social impact initiatives and a more socially aware Gen Z, leaders are looking to the world’s 25+ million refugees as potential employees.

Not only does this support a vulnerable population, but hiring refugees offers employers a new pool of talent from which to draw, whom will bring with them a broader perspective of world affairs. In her presentation, Elena will provide an overview of IMGH and share a global perspective on refugee resettlement with local solutions based on a public-private partnership. In addition to sharing information on the current Afghan refugee crisis and opportunities to get involved in supporting refugees starting new lives in the U.S., she will also discuss the benefits to society, the characteristics of the current talent pool, benefits to innovation and productivity across an organization and challenges to build a more inclusive environment.

About Kamil Khan

Kamil Khan currently serves at the Community Engagement Coordinator at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston.

He has worked in all phases of the refugee migration system. His experiences include working in a refugee camp on the Thailand-Myanmar border where he was a Vocational Specialist for refugee adults between the ages of 20-25. Kamil has also worked for the UNHCR Thailand where he helped process asylum cases and provided culturally-sensitive linguistic services to asylum seekers from Pakistan.

Prior to joining Interfaith Ministries, Kamil was working as an Employment Specialist at the International Rescue Committee in Boise, Idaho; he provided employment services to refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Ukraine, Syria, Eritrea, and Afghanistan.
